CTE Work-Based Learning

Work-Based Learning at Academy Charter School

Academy of Charter School’s Work-Based Learning program has grown over the last 5 years into an opportunity that most of our students understand is a critical part of their educational journey. Graduating from ACS without work-based learning experience is now considered a risk too great to take, and our students and staff support the need for intentional scheduling and programing to allow for all students to participate before graduation.

The Academy’s Work-Based Learning Goals and Philosophy promotes success by:

  • Providing real-life work experiences
  • Expanding learning beyond core academics and the school building
  • Promoting authentic application of essential skills
  • Offering alternative postsecondary pathways to graduation

Work-Based Learning in 27J

Friday, April 25th was no average school day for the 27J students in the South Adams County Fire Workforce Cooperative Program.

They went to the South Adams County Fire Department Training Center to witness some of their hard work go up in flames…but they know it serves an important purpose.

The home is one of two student-built training houses at the center. Over the past year, this home was used by firefighters for a number of life-saving training scenarios. This burn has made room for next year’s house which will give the students an ongoing opportunity to practice their skills in carpentry, masonry, electrical work, plumbing, and other trades.

School District 27J is proud to celebrate many other Work-Based Learning internships! In just its second official year, the program connected over 160 students with hands-on learning experiences at 70 local internship sites during the 2024–2025 school year.

This success is made possible by a dedicated team, including a work-based learning coordinator at each of the district’s three high schools and a district-level coordinator focused on aligning apprenticeship opportunities with career pathways. Together, they help students gain real-world experience that builds a strong foundation for their future careers.

Through strong partnerships with the community, 27J continues to expand opportunities that prepare students for life beyond graduation.
